Button People – Art with Duarte

$30.00

Duarte is always looking for family. At 13, he followed his brother Darnell from New Jersey to Ohio. It was 1970, Darnell had won a scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design. Heavily influenced by his Grandma Amy, she made art from any materials; dolls, clothes, fruitcakes, toys, etc. In the absence of his father, looking for family became a theme in his art. In 2022, Duarte won the Aminah Robinson Fellowship, which gave him access to the Aminah Studio as a resident artist. In that space, Duarte felt his Grandma Amy along with Aminah, and her son Sydney’s presence. This combined with a long list of visitors coming together to celebrate the moment and in that magical studio is where the Button People were inspired. An overwhelming sense of family give your button person a name, place and identity as they are looking to be a part of your family.

Each Button Person is handmade by Columbus-local artist, Richard “Duarte” Brown and comes with a clear case.
